How Is hand lettering Like Spring?

We go through a dark, cold winter and finally start getting some warm days when spring comes. We start seeing the sun more and blossoms on the trees. It feels like a deep inhale after holding our breath for months.

When you start hand lettering it can feel really fun and exciting. But it can also feel really daunting and hard. You might see some hand lettering that you’d like to be able to do and you can’t imagine how you could possibly get to that place.

Just like waiting for spring, we have to wait for our hand lettering to get better. We don’t see the progress we’re making because it comes so slowly. The growth of flowers is slow, and all of a sudden the flower blooms. You don’t always see the daily growth. And that’s how it is with hand lettering. The small moments of practicing over time really add up.

So if you are feeling down about your lettering today, don’t give up. Your lettering will bloom when you may not even expect it.

In the meantime, focus on the things that feel good in your lettering. Maybe you’re not where you want to be yet, but does lettering help you feel calm after a stressful day? Focus on how lettering is making you feel instead of how it looks.

  1. Thanks for your great tips! I particularly need to keep this one in mind while lettering: Focus on how lettering is making you feel instead of how it looks.
I’ve been practicing large brush pen lettering for a while and it looks so bad compared to what I create with my small brush pens. I’ve been lettering this quote to cheer me up: You never fail until you stop trying

    1. Oh thank you for sharing that with me Julie! That is so beautiful!! You are doing great because you’re still going. 🙂
